Moataz Alqaissy (Baghdad, Iraq, 1986) is the very first laureate of the Marianne Van Vyve Prize. In his graduate presentation, Moataz chose to explore the physical and conceptual aspect of painting by freeing the canvas from its support and giving it a defining, almost organic role. He experimented with shapes, textures, pigments and dies to create an evocative ensemble influenced both by the memories of his upbringing in Iraq and by the History of Painting at large.

Since his graduation, Moataz has exhibited his work at Geukens & De Vil Gallery, during the 6th edition of To Be Antwerp in November 2021 and during his first solo show entitled “Just a little Pinprick” in September 2022.
